Goods For Society Toothpaste, Spearmint

Goods For Society Toothpaste in a clear glass jar with a stainless steel pump

Fluoride-free toothpaste with 10% nano-hydroxyapatite, designed for low abrasion (RDA target 50 or lower), with no SLS and no peroxide. It comes in a glass and stainless steel pump dispenser. Every lot is tested for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, and the results are published. 120 g, about 8 months for one person. $18 for one dispenser, or $15 each in a pack of 6. Ships in the US only.

Why it is made this way

Less in the paste. Toothpaste is often sold on extras such as whitening, and many whitening pastes rely on abrasives or bleaching agents. Abrasives wear teeth over time. In a 2023 lab study of simulated brushing on human tooth roots, a charcoal whitening paste caused the most wear of the pastes tested (Journal of Functional Biomaterials, 2023). We think toothpaste should contain as little as possible. This one has 12 ingredients, each with a named purpose, no whitening agents, and a target abrasivity (RDA) of 50 or lower.

No plastic tube. Toothpaste tubes have long been made from layers of different plastics, often over a thin aluminum layer, which normal recycling cannot handle. An estimated 400 million were thrown away in the US each year (As You Sow, 2019). Plastic waste breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, which is one source of microplastics (NOAA). This toothpaste comes in a glass bottle with a stainless steel pump.

A measured portion. The president of the American Dental Hygienists' Association says a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is all you need (TODAY). The pump gives about 0.25 g each time, the weight the CDC uses for a pea-sized amount in its brushing guidance (CDC, 2019).

Questions

Why no fluoride?

This is a fluoride-free option for adults who want one. We do not argue against fluoride. If you are at higher risk of tooth decay, ask your dentist which toothpaste suits you.

Why glass?

So the paste is stored in glass and stainless steel rather than plastic. The material of every part is in the packaging table above.

What is hydroxyapatite?

A calcium phosphate mineral. It makes up most of tooth enamel. In this toothpaste, nano-hydroxyapatite at 10% is a mineral cleaning and polishing agent.

Why test for lead?

Independent testing has found lead in some toothpastes and linked it to ingredients such as calcium carbonate and bentonite clay. We leave those ingredients out, test every lot for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, and publish the results.

How long does a dispenser last?

About 8 months for one person brushing twice a day. A dispenser holds 120 g and one pump is about 0.25 g.

Can I recycle it?

The box and shipping carton are paperboard and cardboard, which most US curbside programs accept. Check your local rules for the glass bottle and the steel pump.
